Patient Positioning

Chapter 2: Table of Contents

Patient Positioning

Patients are placed in a variety of positions depending on the procedure to be performed.  The most common position is dorsal recumbency.  It is used for several abdominal procedures such as ovario-hysterectomy, canine castration, gastro-intestinal foreign body removal or cystotomy. Secure the patient in the desired position using ropes and/or sand bags. The bladder should be palpated and expressed if full prior to abdominal procedures.
