The Distal Limb

Chapter 2: Table of Contents

The Distal Limb

When the distal portion of the limb is not prepared for surgery, it must be covered using a sterile drape or ‘stocking’ in order to prevent contamination of the surgical field. Once stabilized using towel clamps, sterile elastic wrap can be used to cover the stocking and towel clamps facilitating intraoperative manipulation of the limb. Limbs that extend beyond the level of the surgical table can be supported by a mayo stand covered with a sterile plastic drape.
